Principal Firmware Engineer
Location: Foothill Ranch, CA 

Viking is seeking a senior level Firmware/Software Engineer with strong SOC firmware and OS level driver experience


Nature of Job:

Viking is seeking a senior level Firmware/Software Engineer with strong SOC firmware and OS level driver experience. The ideal candidate will have a diverse background including but not limited to Firmware development for microcontroller/microprocessor based SOC solutions, RTOS/embedded OS and Linux Kernel internals. Candidate will be involved in design, development, system verification and maintenance of firmware, drivers and test code for Viking's Non-volatile DIMM and SSD products.

Required Knowledge and Experience:

  • Ability to design and develop Firmware for SOC architecture in embedded systems environment
  • Strong C/C++ programming skills
  • Expertise in Embedded Firmware development for microcontrollers such as ARM, Xilinx Microblaze, Altera NIOS, Lattice, Atmel, PIC etc.
  • Hands on experience with RTOS, Microcontroller OS, Linux etc.
  • Hands on experience integrating design IP such as PCIe/NVMe, SATA, I2C, SPI and UART in an SOC architecture
  • Oversee reliability lab schedules, equipment, space, security, training, etc.
  • Hands on experience in code coverage, profiling and performance evaluation tools
  • H/W board bring-up experience and ability to work with Boot-loaders, BSP’s
  • Work in close collaboration with firmware, hardware, and software engineers throughout the integration process to ensure that designs are correctly implemented.
  • Working knowledge in Linux Kernel, IO path, Storage/block drivers, Memory management, Cache, Kernel drivers & debugging, GNU tools
  • Strong analytical, debugging and problem solving skills, ability to work independently and as a team player
  • Knowledge of DDR3, DDR4 and Flash technologies is highly desired
  • Knowledge of scripting languages like Perl, bash etc.
  • Full software development lifecycle and process
  • Proficient and comfortable with standard software development methodologies including source control systems (such as SVN, CVS or similar) and defect tracking systems (such as bugzilla, JIRA or similar)
  • Solid verbal and written communication skills
  • H/W board bring-up experience and ability to work with Boot-loaders, BSP’s
  • BS in EE/CS required, MS preferred
  • 10+ years experience

Preferred Experience:

  • Familiar with BIST functions
  • BIOS/UEFI development for x86 platforms
  • File system IO experience is a plus
  • Sound knowledge of ZFS and other popular file systems
  • Experience working with traffic generators, protocol analyzers, PCIe analyzers and other HW debug tools
  • Familiar with Linux Open Source licensing
  • Contributor (developer) to Linux Open Source a plus

Failure Analysis Engineer
Location: Foothill Ranch, CA 

Responsible for the reliability and failure analysis lab operations in the analysis of process or field failures


Nature of Job:

Responsible for the reliability and failure analysis lab operations in the analysis of process or field failures. Works with major flash, controller, and memory device suppliers to develop quality plans, reliability monitoring requirements, and periodic report strategies for new and existing products. Must be able to obtain and analyze data needed to produce concise answers in customer failure analysis reports. Will set up and perform periodic reliability testing, and assist with component level failure analysis related to PCB assemblies to determine appropriate next steps in the analysis process. Will also coordinate external resources for semiconductor device FA’s and interpret results and be involved in a wide scope of opportunities for improvements related to manufacturing processes and products.

Recommend corrective actions to address process trends based on root causes of failures. Define resources or tools required to support failure investigations such as external labs that can provide services for thermal screening, accelerated testing, cross section, emission microscopy, product performance over temperature and voltage, etc.

Will have responsibility for Failure Analysis lab for feedback to support design and process control, new product qualification, test coverage, correlation, and test program control. Works to close investigations of semiconductor related failure trends and minimize yield impacts for processes and products to ensure that Viking supplies high quality, reliable products to our customers. Provide information or act as liaison between Viking and the customer regarding semiconductor quality issues.

Set metrics for semiconductor supplier performance. Will generate reports that highlight improvement opportunities for process, design, packaging or handling, supplier development, etc.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work with New Product Development to identify test plans appropriate for unproven or non-standard design approaches, new technology, materials, processes, etc.
  • Assist in developing Highly Accelerated Life Test plans that define product samples, resources, scheduling, etc. Generate HALT reports that define product and process improvements based on test results.
  • Assist in developing Reliability Monitoring plans for established products. Generate reports that propose improvements for product or processes based on test results.
  • Generate product field tracking reports for various products that show performance compared to expected trends or goals for return rates and costs and support corrective actions. Track product performance by month built or similar segments of time to gauge product reliability performance.
  • Develop and manage methods for tracking process failure trends based on failure analysis results; make recommendations for corrective actions, track cost for products recovered in the FA process and costs of scrap forced by restrictions in resources, technical ability, complexity, etc.
  • Oversee reliability lab schedules, equipment, space, security, training, etc.
  • Establish off site test resources and logistics methods necessary to support various product test plans. Test plans must contain availability for immediate responses for screens or sampling tests to resolve real time process opportunities that require quick measures of performance or risk impacts.
  • BS Degree preferred
  • Track or retrieve test results of product samples, batch, or work order processing for each test conducted internal or external.

Experience and Skills Required:

  • Requires a detailed understanding of circuit card assembly processes focusing on DRAM and FLASH SSD devices, components and computer sub-systems thermal dynamics, failure analysis techniques, equipment, etc. Understand standard PCB fab, semiconductor packaging processes, and packaging types including uBGA and package technologies and associated risks, etc. Must know analog and digital circuit analysis techniques for board and component and module level. Must have extensive experience in environmental test techniques, retrieval of data needed to support product yield improvement and failure analysis of circuits using equipment such as curve tracer, ATE parametric analyzer, oscilloscope, spectrum analyzers, and other advanced analytical tools. Must be familiar with CAD, CAM, and must know databases, EXCEL, MS Word, etc. Knowledge of DOE or other specialized software related to reliability is a plus.
  • This position requires a minimum of 5 years in a technical position preferably in the flash, flash controller, memory or similar industry, and a BS degree in Electrical Engineering or an additional 4 years experience in Failure Analysis.
  • Key skills are similar to leadership in project management and the ability to analyze technical details related to electrical, mechanical, handling, and industry packaging issues. Strong written and verbal communication skills are required. ASQ certification and Six Sigma experience is a plus. Must be familiar with the AS-9100 QMS and be able to function with the QMS.
  • Must be able to work with little supervision and be able to set and balance tasks based on inputs from customers and supervisors.
